When you look up to the ceiling of the top floor in your home, you shouldn't see discoloration and bubbling. If you have noticed that there are some discolored areas along the exterior walls of the home, and paint is bubbling, it's time to call a roofing company.
These are signs that water is coming through the roof of the house and that you have a moisture problem. Talk with the roofing contractors about these problems and what it will take to fix the complications that are damaging your home.
Probable Roofing Problems
If there are water marks around the exterior walls of the home, the most probable roofing problems include:
- Flooding or jammed gutters
- Water leaks at the base of the roof where water should run off
- Damaged shingles
- Removed or damaged flashing
The roofing contractor will be able to evaluate what is going on when they get on top of the roof and look from the attic.
Stopping the leak will be the top concern. From there the roofers will decide if they can repair the problems that cause the leak and restore the roof, or if you need more extensive work done.
Replacement and Changes
If the roofers think that there is rot and damage to the base of the roof and that you need a new roof, or large portions have to be replaced, consider investing in a new roof. If this is an investment you are ready to make, be sure to do the following:
- New roof base
- Insulation throughout the attic composed of polyurethane
- Consider metal roofing panels
- Use metal roof flashing
- Install new gutters with covers
Get a quote to have all of these things included when the roofers have to put on the new roof, and ask about the cost for hauling all your old roofing materials away.
Once you have addressed all the problems you have on the exterior, you can move forward with repairing the damages on the interior of the home. This may mean that you need to have a drywall professional come and spray over the ceiling areas that are damaged and bubbling, and then the ceiling will need to be repainted.
If you see water damage and it's getting worse, get help right away. Don't waste any more time as you could be putting the structure of your home at risk if there is water rotting and weakening the wood.
